Top 5 Must Try Beers In Greece

Want to know what beers to try in Greece?

Here is a list, in no particular order, of the top 5 must try beers of Greece.

Alfa Weiss

The Alfa Beer Company has the 2nd largest market share in the Greece beer market. Their most popular beer is their pale lager, a beer that you can go to Greece without trying. However, they do produce a 2nd beer, Alfa Weiss. A traditional German style Weiss beer, or Hefeweizen. It is rich in a deep banana flavor and has a deep haze. The can label is printed upside down for you to store the can inverted and flip it over when you go to pour it, allowing any of the haze that might have settled to revert back into solution. This beer is delicious and is a very underserved beer style. This beer goes to show what a company with the funds to try something different can do.

Volkan Black Lager

Volkan approaches beer making with every detail focused on making a unique, true to Greece artisanal product. The black lager culminates 3 very unique processes in making this beer a must try. Lava rock filtration of the water used in brewing, a distillate added from leaves of the ancient citron fruit tree and honey produced locally on the island of Santorini. All 3 of these are rare in ANY beer, let alone all in the same beer. These processes might not be a unicorn in making the most outstanding flavorful beer ever, but they are unique and true to Greece.

Fix Hellas

A beer with history dating back to 1850 in Greece, it is the beer with the largest market share in Greece which is still Greek-owned. A pale lager using southern german yeast, it could be labeled as a helles beer style. Instead the beer is printed with the word “Hellas,” referring to the greek name for the country of Greece. This beer is a nice change from the other traditional European pale lagers that are widely available and popular. A great mix of soft drinkability, history and a bit more unique flavor.

Amstel

A beer brand with national recognition. They have a brewery in Greece that produces a Greek version for the customers locally. This beer has the highest sales and market share in Greece and is the people’s choice for beer. A traditional pale European lager, its taste will be similar to other lagers you may have had. However, this beer is consistent, perfect during the long Greek summer’s and is a must try to have the true Greek experience.

Syrma Golden Ale (Local Craft)

This list wouldn’t be complete without encouraging you to try the local beer of wherever you are visiting! In my case, it was the island of Milos, and this beer is brewed using local Milos honey. No matter what the beer style, or where you might be, local craft beer has increased in quality over the years. It also helps support true local people of the area. Gotta give it a go!

I hope this list has helped you decide what to drink when in Greece!

Have you had other beers in Greece that you think are a must-try?
